Understand your hair loss

Hair Breakage, Dryness and Damage

Breakage is damage to the hair shaft along its length. It looks like hair loss but the follicle is healthy and the root is intact.

Is this me?

  • Short broken strands of uneven length, not full-length hairs
  • No white bulb at the end of the fallen hair
  • Split ends, roughness and frizz
  • Hair snaps when combing, especially when wet
  • A history of colouring, straightening, smoothening or regular heat styling
  • Tight ponytails, buns or braids worn daily

Why it happens

The most useful test at home is to look at what has fallen. A hair that shed from the follicle has a small white bulb at the root end and is full length. A broken hair has no bulb and is short and uneven. Breakage means the follicle is fine and the shaft is failing — from chemical processing, heat, hard water, rough towel-drying or tight styling that pulls at the root.

Serums and minoxidil do not fix breakage, because the problem is not in the follicle. What helps is reducing the damage load: a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser, conditioning the lengths (not the roots), lowering heat, loosening the styling, and giving the hair time to grow out. Protein intake matters too. Persistent traction from tight styles can eventually damage the follicle itself, so it is worth changing early.

What to do next

This is a hair-care problem rather than a hair-loss protocol. Gentle cleansing, conditioning the lengths, less heat and looser styling are what help.

When to consult first

Speak to the doctor first if any of these apply:
Sudden or patchy hair loss · scalp pain, sores, redness or oozing · scarring of the scalp · pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding · under 18 · a heart or blood-pressure condition or medicines for it · hair loss getting rapidly worse.

What to expect, and when

Damaged hair cannot be repaired, only managed until it grows out. Expect the hair to feel better within four to six weeks of reducing damage, and to look different as new growth replaces the damaged length over six to twelve months.

If your hair fall is not under control after a consistent three to six months, chat with the doctor rather than adding more products on your own.

Common questions

Is breakage the same as hair loss?

No. In breakage the follicle is healthy and the shaft fails. Look for the white bulb: shed hairs have one, broken hairs do not.

Will a serum fix split ends?

No. Split ends can only be cut off. A serum works on the follicle, not the damaged shaft.

Is heat styling the main cause?

Heat, chemical processing and tight styling are the common causes, often together. Hard water and rough drying add to it.

Can tight hairstyles cause real hair loss?

Yes. Sustained traction can eventually damage follicles permanently, so loosen styles early.
