Female Pattern Hair Loss & Diffuse Thinning
In women, hair loss usually shows as a widening central parting and an overall thinning across the top of the scalp, while the front hairline is preserved.
Is this me?
- The parting looks wider than it did a year ago
- The ponytail feels thinner when you tie it
- More scalp shows on top in photographs or bright light
- Hair fall increased after childbirth, illness or a diet change
- Periods are irregular, or there is unwanted facial hair
- The front hairline is intact but the crown has thinned
Why it happens
Female pattern hair loss thins hair diffusely over the top of the scalp rather than creating bald patches. Hormonal sensitivity plays a part, but in women the picture is very often mixed: low ferritin (iron stores), low vitamin D or B12, thyroid disorder, PCOD, crash dieting, or a telogen effluvium sitting on top of a pattern loss. That is why blood tests matter more here than in men, and why treating only with a serum can disappoint.
The practical approach is to correct what is correctable, support the growth phase with a night serum and morning minoxidil where appropriate, and review after three to four months with photographs taken the same way each time. If periods are irregular or there is unwanted facial hair, the hormonal side needs looking at — see the PCOD page.
What the doctor prescribes for this
Open the doctor-defined protocol for this condition. You will see the exact medicines with their dosing, the blood tests to get done, and whether a consultation is needed — and you can create the whole package in one click.
When to consult first
Sudden or patchy hair loss · scalp pain, sores, redness or oozing · scarring of the scalp · pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding · under 18 · a heart or blood-pressure condition or medicines for it · hair loss getting rapidly worse.
What to expect, and when
Deficiency correction shows over three to six months, because hair grows about a centimetre a month. Expect reduced daily fall by weeks 8–12 and visible density change by months 4–6. Postpartum shedding usually settles on its own by 6–12 months.
If your hair fall is not under control after a consistent three to six months, chat with the doctor rather than adding more products on your own.
Common questions
Can women use minoxidil?
Yes, when it is appropriate for them — but not during pregnancy, while trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding, and not without the doctor clearing it if there is a heart or blood-pressure condition.
Why do I need blood tests?
In women, correctable causes such as low ferritin, low vitamin D or a thyroid problem are common. Treating the hair without correcting these usually disappoints.
My hair started falling after delivery. Is it permanent?
That is usually telogen effluvium, which recovers. See the telogen effluvium page.
Will my front hairline recede?
In female pattern loss the frontal hairline is usually preserved. A receding hairline in a woman should be examined.
