Dandruff and Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Dandruff is flaking and irritation of the scalp caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast on an oily scalp, with the skin reacting to its by-products.
Is this me?
- White or yellow flakes on the scalp, hair or shoulders
- Itching, especially when the scalp is oily
- Redness or a greasy, scaly look at the hairline or behind the ears
- Flakes come back within days of washing
- Scalp feels tight, sore or tender
- Hair fall that improves when the scalp settles
Why it happens
Malassezia is a yeast that lives on everyone’s skin. It feeds on scalp oil and releases fatty acids that some people’s skin reacts to with inflammation, faster skin turnover and flaking. That is why dandruff is worse on oily scalps, in humid weather and during stress — and why it is a recurring condition to be controlled rather than a one-time infection to be cured.
An itchy, inflamed scalp also increases hair fall, because scratching damages hair and inflammation disturbs the growth cycle. Getting the scalp calm usually reduces the shedding by itself. The treatment differs by severity: mild to moderate dandruff responds to a medicated shampoo twice a week; severe flaking needs a leave-on lotion before the shampoo, on alternate days, until the scalp settles.

When to consult first
Sudden or patchy hair loss · scalp pain, sores, redness or oozing · scarring of the scalp · pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding · under 18 · a heart or blood-pressure condition or medicines for it · hair loss getting rapidly worse.
What to expect, and when
Itching usually eases within one to two weeks. Flaking takes three to four weeks to come under control. Once settled, most people need a maintenance wash once or twice a week to keep it away.
If your hair fall is not under control after a consistent three to six months, chat with the doctor rather than adding more products on your own.
Common questions
How often should I use Jysalic Shampoo?
Twice a week for mild to moderate dandruff. In severe dandruff: on alternate days, apply Jysalic CT Lotion for 50 minutes first, then wash with Jysalic Shampoo for 6–7 minutes.
Does dandruff cause hair loss?
It does not destroy follicles, but the inflammation and scratching increase shedding. Controlling the scalp reduces the fall.
Will it come back?
Dandruff is a controllable, recurring condition. Most people need a maintenance wash to keep it away.
When should I see the doctor?
If there is pain, sores, oozing or bleeding, or the flaking does not settle on the severe protocol.
